Standing in front of a full closet yet finding nothing to wear: an actual global sensation we literally all share. But why? How is it, that we are suddenly incapable of putting our very own stuff to good use and pull an outfit together? Why is it that we feel that specific kind of overwhelm? I mean everything in our closet has been bought by ourselves at some point. That some point sometimes even being two days earlier… As absurd as it sounds, feels, and even is: the phenomenon is very much explainable. Though its origin is historically rooted, the reasons are a lot more personal than you'd expect from clothes.

First things first: Fashion derives from an aristocratic world order. And the emphasis here, truly is on: order. What you wore signalled your social standing, status ranking as well as what part of society you belonged to. It was a strictly regulated system, dictated and reinforced from the outside. Today's fashion market is largely experienced as a democratised medium for self-expression. In theory, anyone can wear anything and express, or place, themselves however and wherever they like. And exactly here lies the catch: Uncertainty kicks in. We end up chasing lifestyles and fashion trends in the constant hope for outside approval and a sense of belonging instead of developing an actual point of view, by evolving our personal style. Now that everyone can be anyone, the most pressing question for everyone truly is: who am I, or who do I want to be?

But let’s not panic. The issue, as intense as it sounds, especially when spoken out loud, is entirely solvable. Good news first: Not with more dogma or another rulebook, but with a bit of honest self-reflection and introspection. Turns out, our outside appearance is, like so many other things: an inside job. Which also means: entirely ours to shape and mould. As per usual, the problem is complex, and the solution: simple, but significant.

Here are the 10 most common reasons behind “having nothing to wear”, plus what actually helps:

  1. You let the fashion industry intimidate you.  You do, in fact, not have to agree with everything the fashion market and its media tries to sell you. You make the rules here. The "Self" is already incorporated in "self-expression". And from a style POV: always, very much in.

  2. You're stuck on repeat. Also known as a style rot. You combine the same pieces the same way, over and over and over again. Resulting in you boring yourself. Creativity is the fix here, along with some courage to actually play.

  3. Your style hasn't evolved with you.  We evolve: our personality, our circumstances, our preferences. Your closet is allowed to reflect that. Style is a journey, not a fixed state.

  4. You're clinging to limiting beliefs/ "rules" Root cause of this is mainly, rather hiding than expressing oneself to "fit in". The easiest example: black. No, it doesn't always work, and it doesn't have to. Especially not if it doesn't actually match your personality.

  5. You have not exhausted your closet. Thinking in single items rather than combinations is limiting. As covered before: It’s all in the mix.

  6. You're dressing a fantasy of yourself instead of your true self.  Personal style is tied to your actual lifestyle. When the two don't match, you're always in costume. You're not a catalogue mannequin, you're a distinct person with an actual life. Respect and show it.

  7. Impulse versus intention.  Sometimes you buy just for the sake of buying. That happens to everyone. But trends are no guarantee for great personal style, if anything, they dilute it. Shopping with intention is the art of choosing consciously instead of just buying into whatever is sold to you.

  8. You're genuinely missing the basics.  Even the most creative looks need quiet elements to hold the drama together. When everything shouts, it quickly turns into noise.

  9. You got talked into a wardrobe made entirely of basics, instead of building your own foundation. The flip side of point 8 applies here: when everything's quiet, it quickly just goes flat.

  10. You fell for the misconception of the capsule wardrobe.  Contrary to popular belief, defaulting to navy, beige, white and black as a one-size-fits-all formula isn't what a capsule wardrobe actually is. A real capsule wardrobe is a curated, foundational set of pieces shaped by your personality, your life and your taste. One that mixes and matches with ease. It communicates you. Individually. It really is not a prescribed, muted colour palette. (More on this in an upcoming post.) As you can tell, this list could easily run even longer, but the core message remains the same: personal style has nothing to do with rules or restrictions. At the end of the day it's self-image, expressed through clothing. It’s a case of self-leadership rather than just plain closet management. As stated before: At its core, it's an inside job.

If you'd like your wardrobe to start working for you, and with you: just reach out. I'd love to help you communicate and express who you really are, visually.
